Our Frequently Asked Questions

LIFESAVER TECHNOLOGY

What does a LIFESAVER water filter remove?

The ultra-filtration technology within LIFESAVER products removes all microbiological contamination from water. The LIFESAVER water filter is the only portable filter to block viruses including the commonly known: cholera, polio, parvovirus and ebola. The LIFESAVER bottle and jerrycan have passed testing by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, proving that the smallest of viruses are removed (please refer to the individual testing reports for further detail).

What size are the pores in a LIFESAVER water filter?

LIFESAVER products contain a cartridge which holds ultra-filtration hollow fibre membranes with microscopic pores small enough to block viruses and bacteria, but large enough to allow vital minerals within the water to pass through. The pores are 15 nanometers / 0.015 microns in size. This means that LIFESAVER technology can block the smallest known waterborne virus; parvovirus at 18 nanometers / 0.018 microns in size and the smallest known waterborne bacteria at 400 nanometers / 0.4 microns in size. The smallest bacteria is 200 nanometres in size.

How does LIFESAVER technology work?

LIFESAVER products are sealed units that are pressurised by using a hand pump, the pressure that is forced into the sealed unit pushes water through the pores of the membrane filters and out through the exit nozzle leaving the microbiological contamination behind.

How can I fill a LIFESAVER product with water?

You can use a LIFESAVER product to scoop water up from any fresh water source including: lakes, rivers, streams and ponds. Alternatively water can be poured into a LIFESAVER product from a tap, hose, pitcher, bucket, rainwater harvesting system or from any other container suitable for holding water.

How long does water take to start flowing from a LIFESAVER product?

Filtered water is emitted from a LIFESAVER product immediately, once primed, providing you with instant access to microbiologically sterile drinking water.

How quickly does water flow from each LIFESAVER product?

Water flow rates vary depending on the LIFESAVER product being used. The following products have been tested and provide an approximate indication of water flow rates.

1500UF bottle = 1.3 litres per minute @ 0.25 bar (g)

4000UF bottle = 2 litres per minute @ 0.25 bar (g)

6000UF bottle = 2.5 litres per minute @ 0.25 bar (g)

10000UF jerrycan = 3 litres per minute @ 0.6 bar (g)

15000UF jerrycan = 3.5 litres per minute @ 0.6 bar (g)

20000UF jerrycan = 4 litres per minute @ 0.6 bar (g)

5000UF cube: 0.75 litres per minute @ 0.50 bar (g)

C2: 12 litres per minute (6 litres per minute per tap) @ 0.34 bar (g)

Has LIFESAVER technology been tested?

Further details regarding LIFESAVER technology compliancy can be found on each product data sheet.

Is there a restriction on the temperature that the products can be used in?

Yes, the minimum operating temperature is >0°C/32°F and maximum operating temperature is 50°C/122°F.

PRODUCT SHELF LIFE

What is the shelf life of a LIFESAVER ultra-filtration cartridge?

LIFESAVER products can be stored unused for up to three years from the date of manufacture. The hollow fibre membranes contained in all our cartridges need to remain hydrated to retain their structure, we encase the membranes in food grade glycerine as a hydration medium that would eventually evaporate to the point that rehydration is required (approx. 3 years) this is why we advise priming the membranes with water before this 3 year point. Once primed the LIFESAVER product is good to go for the identified litre capacity of the cartridge. Foil wrapped cartridges give a longer shelf life (13+ years) as the foil protects the membranes from a dry atmosphere – Much better for people buying for preparedness.

What is the shelf life of a LIFESAVER ultra-filtration cartridge (foil wrapped)?

A foil wrapped cartridge, if sealed in the condition that it was purchased, can be stored for up to ten years from the date of manufacture. The extended shelf life is due to the use of military grade barrier foils, with the lowest moisture vapour transition rate available. On opening of the foil wrapped packaging, the cartridge can be left stored for a further three years before priming is required. In total, providing 13-year shelf life.

What is the shelf life of an activated carbon filter?

An activated carbon filter, if sealed in its original polythene wrapping, can be stored for up to 3 years from the date of manufacture. If left unsealed the activated carbon filter can be stored for up to 2 months before expiry. Carbon is a natural absorbent, so if left unsealed it will be absorbing all pollutants in the air around it.

What is the shelf life of an activated carbon filter (foil wrapped)

A foil wrapped activated carbon filter, if sealed in the condition that it was purchased, can be stored for up to 10 years from the date of manufacture. On opening of the foil wrapped packaging, the activated carbon filter can be stored for a further 3 years if sealed in the zip lock foil bag it was supplied in. In total, providing a 13-year shelf life. If left unsealed, the activated carbon filter can be stored for up to 2 months before expiry.

What is the shelf life of an activated carbon filter (foil wrapped)

The date that your LIFESAVER product was manufactured is imprinted on the side of the cartridge; there are two possible formats:
  • 24510 = 245th day of 2010
  • 140613 = 14th of June 2013
The cartridge has a guaranteed three-year shelf life from the date imprinted on the side of the cartridge.

PRODUCT STORAGE

How should I store a LIFESAVER product?

Once primed, keep the membranes of the cartridge hydrated by storing at least 1 inch/2.5 cm of water in the LIFESAVER product at all times whilst keeping the product sealed with the pump and tap in place. Failure to do so will cause the membranes to dry out, the nano-filter pores to close and the system to shut down.

How should I store activated carbon filter(s)?

After opening a pack of activated carbon filters ensure that you store the additional, spare activated carbon filters within the foil zip lock bag provided, in a plastic zip lock bag or within a sealed container. This will preserve their shelf life for up to three years (dependent on the quality of the container/bag being fully air-tight). If left unsealed, the activated carbon filters will expire within two months. When storing your LIFESAVER product for a period of one month or more, the activated carbon filter should be removed and discarded. Replace with a new carbon filter before next use.

Is there a restriction on the temperature that the products can be stored in (unopened)?

Yes, unused the minimum storage temperature is -10°C/14°F and the maximum storage temperature is 50°C/122°F.

LONG-TERM STORAGE: ONE MONTH OR MORE

Is there a restriction on the temperature that the products can be stored in (unopened)?

Yes, unused the minimum storage temperature is -10°C/14°F and the maximum storage temperature is 50°C/122°F.

I'm not planning to use my LIFESAVER for a period of one month or more, how should I store it?

Remove the activated carbon filter from your LIFESAVER product and clean as per the cleaning instructions, detailed in the product instruction manual. Release pressure from the product by unscrewing the pump slowly until you hear a hiss sound. Hold on to the pump firmly whilst unscrewing. Store at least 1 inch/ 2.5 cm of water in the product at all times. After pressure is released screw the pump back into place. Ensure the pump and tap are sealed. Store in a cool environment away from direct sunlight.

I haven't used my LIFESAVER for a period of one month and more, what should I do before re-using it?

Clean your LIFESAVER product before re-use, refer to the product instruction manual for cleaning instructions. Fit a new activated carbon filter before re-use; refer to the product instruction manual for guidance.

If I were to buy this product today and store it away only to be used in the case of an emergency, would it still work 10 years on from now?

If you do not prime the LIFESAVER product, the shelf life is three years. If however, you prime the product, and store at least 1 inch/2.5 cm of water in the sealed product at all times, you can then store the product indefinitely as per the correct storage instructions. Refer to the product instruction manual. Please note, that any stored water will eventually stagnate if left for a prolonged period of time. If you have purchased a LIFESAVER product in hermetically sealed military grade foil, each product will have a 10-year shelf life before priming is required. On opening of the foil, the cartridge can be left stored for a further three years before priming is required. In total, providing 13-year shelf life.

EXTREME TEMPERATURES AND TRANSPORTATION

Can I use a LIFESAVER product in frozen conditions?

Yes, however the system should be protected from freezing. Freezing can compromise the integrity of the cartridge. The minimum operating temperature is >0 oC / 32 oF.

Can I use a LIFESAVER product in hot conditions?

Yes, however do not leave the LIFESAVER product in direct sunlight for long periods of time. The maximum operating temperature is 50 oc/122 oF.

Can I take my LIFESAVER on an aeroplane?

Yes you can take your LIFESAVER on an aeroplane, it will not be damaged by air pressure and temperature changes during the flight.

How should I transport my LIFESAVER whilst flying?

Firstly release pressure from the LIFESAVER product, unscrew the pump slowly until you hear a hiss sound. Hold on to the pump firmly whilst unscrewing. Drain off any water and re-seal ensuring the pump is screwed back in place. Pack securely in the hold or within hand luggage. Pour 1 inch/2.5cm of water into the vessel when the destination is reached.

How long will my LIFESAVER water filter last?

In ideal conditions the cartridge will process the number of litres specified. As an example a 4000 litre cartridge in the LIFESAVER bottle 4000UF will last approximately 3 years and 7 months. This is based on the user filtering 3 litres per day; as per the WHO guidelines for drinking and water recommendations. These are approximate life spans based on the cartridge being kept hydrated as per the storage instructions and well maintained as per the maintenance and care instructions.

Does the life span of a LIFESAVER product depend upon the cleanliness of the water that goes in?

Yes the turbidity of the water will affect the life span of a LIFESAVER product. For example, murky pond water is likely to be highly turbid meaning it looks brown and very cloudy, it may have dirt particles and debris floating in it, compare this against rainwater, which typically, will have low turbidity. LIFESAVER products that have a higher cartridge rating such as the LIFESAVER bottle 6000UF or the LIFESAVER jerrycan 20000UF will have better resistance at filtering high turbidity water due to the membranes in the cartridge having a greater surface area.

Will highly turbid water clog up the LIFESAVER cartridge?

If you are filtering water that contains visible particles of mud and debris, over time this will form a caking layer on the outer surface of the cartridge. In order to keep the cartridge in the best condition, clean the cartridge as per the cleaning instructions in the product instruction manual. Cleaning will agitate the caking layer formed on the cartridge, which will dissipate and fall away.

How will I know when the LIFESAVER cartridge needs to be replaced?

As the cartridge reaches the end of its life, a greater number of pumps are required to induce water flow. There will come a point at which despite the recommended maximum number of pumps water does not flow. Before you install a new cartridge, check the level of water in the product, as water level becomes low, flow rate can reduce. Clean the product as the cartridge may be covered in dirt and debris. Refer to the product instruction manual for clean instructions.

Will a 4000UF cartridge fit into a 6000UF bottle and vice versa?

Yes you can install a 1500UF or 4000UF cartridge into a 6000UF bottle shell and vice versa. Like wise you can fit a jerrycan shell with either a 10000UF cartridge or a 20000UF cartridge and vice versa.

WHAT DOES THE LIFESAVER CARTRIDGE NOT REMOVE?

Salt water

The LIFESAVER cartridge will remove all microbiological contamination from seawater, but will not remove the salt. This is because salt is in solution/dissolved within the water and LIFESAVER technology only filters out suspended particles only.

Brackish water

Brackish water is a mix of seawater and fresh water and can be found in estuaries. LIFESAVER technology is not suitable for filtering brackish water, as salt exists in solution within the water. LIFESAVER technology only removes particles in suspension within water.

Grey water

Grey water - water waste from baths, sinks, washing machines and other kitchen appliances contains soap and detergents that are in solution within water, LIFESAVER technology cannot filter out soaps and detergents because it cannot remove particles in solution.

Urine

You can filter urine with the LIFESAVER technology, and it will remove all microbiological contamination, however as there is a certain amount of salt in urine the resulting water will contain a level of salt, which LIFESAVER technology cannot remove. We suggest that you could potentially filter urine up to four times before the salt levels become dangerous. It is recommend that you seek alternative freshwater sources before using the LIFESAVER water filter in this way.

Coffee and red wine

LIFESAVER products will not turn coffee or red wine into water.

Chemicals

Chemicals mix in water, meaning that they are dissolvable and appear in solution within water. The LIFESAVER ultra-filtration cartridge only removes particles in suspension in water, not particles in solution. However you can use the optional activated carbon filter, which can remove traces of chemicals.

Microcystin

LIFESAVER technology is able to filter out the microcystin bacteria but not the toxins and chemicals that the bacteria secretes in water.

ACTIVATED CARBON FILTER

What is an activated carbon filter?

An activated carbon filter is designed as a secondary stage filtration, which is in place to 'polish' the water. An activated carbon filter will remove traces of chemical residues including pesticides, endocrine disrupting compounds, hydrocarbons, medical residues and heavy metals such as lead and copper. It also eliminates bad tastes and odours from contaminates such as chlorine and sulphur, making clean water more natural tasting.

How does an activated carbon filter work?

An activated carbon filter works due to the presence of carbon. Carbon is a natural absorbent which absorbs all pollutants in the air around it.

What is the lifespan of an activated carbon filter?

Bottle activated carbon filter will process approximately 250 litres of water. Cube activated carbon filter will process approximately 100 litres of water. Jerrycan activated carbon filter will process approximately 500 litres of water.

Will the LIFESAVER water filter work without the addition of an activated carbon filter?

Yes. The activated carbon filter is an optional extra. The LIFESAVER water filter will continue to remove all microbiological contamination with or without the activated carbon filter in place.

How do I know when I need to change the activated carbon filter?

An activated carbon filter does not automatically shut down when it stops absorbing the pollutants around it, therefore we recommend you keep track of approximately how many litres of water have been produced from the LIFESAVER product, this will give you a rough indication of when the carbon filter needs changing. It is also recommended to change the activated carbon filter when storing a LIFESAVER product for one month or more without use.

Can I use my LIFESAVER product to store or carry dirty water?

Yes, LIFESAVER products are designed to carry and store dirty water. You only need to use the LIFESAVER product to produce clean water at the point of use. This negates the need to filter water and store it clean. By not storing water clean, you are removing the risk of re-contamination.

FAILSAFE TECHNOLOGY

What is FAILSAFE technology?

ALL LIFESAVER products incorporate FAILSAFE TECHNOLOGY. This means that once the cartridge has reached the end of its service life, the cartridge will automatically shut down and stop working. Therefore preventing you from drinking contaminated water. At this point, you will need to install a new cartridge.

How can I be sure that the cartridge has expired?

Operate the product as per the product instruction manual, with the recommended maximum water level and the recommended maximum number of pumps. If no water is being dispensed from the LIFESAVER product, the cartridge has expired.

What is the warranty on LIFESAVER products?

If purchased from LIFESAVER systems ltd directly or from an authorised LIFESAVER distributor/reseller the LIFESAVER product comes with a 2-year international warranty from the date of purchase, against defects in materials and workmanship. Should your LIFESAVER product prove defective within 2 years from the date of purchase you should return it to the retailer that you originally purchased it from. LIFESAVER systems will, at its sole discretion, repair or replace the damaged item(s). You should ensure that you retain your proof of purchase showing the date on which you purchased your LIFESAVER product. Without it we are unable to offer warranty assistance. This International Limited Warranty does not affect your statutory legal rights. The warranty is non-transferable and does not apply to second hand purchases.
