With the death toll numbered at over 1000 and many more missing, the key supplies needed are water and sanitation. Unicef’s Angela Travis says that “80% of the water supply is out in Cagayan de Oro” highlighting the ever-pressing need for water and sanitation supplies with children being most at risk from disease and dehydration.
Several truckloads of aid including bottled water have already been transported into Iligan and Cagayan de Oro and other affected areas. Water sources still intact, face contamination due to the amount of decomposing detritus in the flood water. The health authories are concerned about a health epidemic developing unless adequate help is given.
