Thanks to some very kind donors we have used the funds raised from this appeal to ship quantities of LIFESAVER jerrycans and replacement cartridges out to Karachi. They follow some 500 LIFESAVER jerrycans that have already been shipped to Karachi courtesy of the

drinking waterMahvash and Jahangir Siddiqui Foundation and an amazing donation from 2 very generous people with big hearts. Another 500 were flown out by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) to the north of the country. The Mahvash and Jahangir Siddiqui Foundation have been distributing them in cooperation with the UN and Local government officials to villagers and into camps throughout Pakistan. Our main focus has been in Sindh Province in the south of the country. The difference our LIFESAVER jerrycans are making is truly amazing. 100’s of thousands of villagers have not yet been reached by the UN or the government. Those that have made it to camps might be described as the lucky ones. Another organisation helping with distribution is OSDI (Organisation for Social Development Initiative) based in Karachi. They have been kind enough to distribute the jerrycans paid for by this appeal, to Pakistan's rural and poverty-stricken communities without access to clean drinking water. OSDI aims, with the help of the LIFESAVER jerrycan, 'to improve the health in rural communities by providing access to safe drinking water that will reduce waterborne diseases, minimize health expenditures and raise the overall standard of living....according to [a] survey conducted by OSDI, on average a rural Pakistani household spends approximately Rs 400 on purchasing medicines for waterborne diseases that are easily preventable if there is adequate access to clean drinking water.' To help ameliorate this situation, OSDI have given 83 LIFESAVER jerrycans to 7 villages in Sindh, Pakistan ensuring 844 households have access to clean drinking water.

Michael Pritchard CEO and inventor of LIFESAVER technology has travelled to Pakistan several times. The sites and stories he witnessed make compelling reading. Below is an extract from his blog:-

"Barren as this place was, you could detect a sense of anticipation on the faces of those we approached. Quickly a huddle formed around Harry and Maqsood and within a minute a young man was heading down to the floodwaters to fill the LIFESAVER jerrycan. As he carried it back more people had gathered around and the village elder was now being talked through how to use the LIFESAVER jerrycan by Harry. Harry wasn't a policeman anymore....His subconscious spirit had taken over and his purpose was to help his brothers and sisters break free from the terrible shackles of this natural disaster”Michael Pritchard – Blog

filling waterThe people of Pakistan need your help as the worst floods for 80 years continue to devastate their land. The death toll is likely to increase and millions more people will become homeless. LIFESAVER’s focus is not the 1000’s of Army, Government or NGO camps scattered up and down Pakistan. The conclusion we came to from speaking to people on the ground and in the camps, was they were already being provided with relatively good drinking water, certainly in comparison to those out in the remote villages. It is the displaced villagers perched on the causeways and in the cut-off villages who need our help the most.

I know it is hard for us to believe but all of those villagers who had been displaced up upon the causeways were drinking straight from the flood waters. They did not have anything to help purify the water, not even simple chlorine tablets (which quite frankly would have been of little use due to the high quantities of suspended solids in the water) they just drank it neat!

“The emerging story that I see is the people who have made it to camps are being well looked after. But it is those who have not, cannot or do not wish to make the journey who are the people in real need. In Sindh alone 1000’s of villages have been swept away with the floods with more being affected right now as I write. Most of the poorer homes are constructed of flimsy materials like coppiced branches or reeds which have been weaved and lashed together. The floods arrived so quickly most fled with nothing. The brave and the fortunate managed to throw as many of their possessions as they could onto their bed frames and headed for higher ground. Some even managed to save some of their animals but most lost everything. When I say everything I mean everything save for the shirts on their backs.” - Michael Pritchard – Blog
